2005 Lambing

We are lambing about 65 Katahdin ewes this spring and around 20 Barbados/X ewes.  We lambed a group of 12 in January and will have a small group of 7 lamb in late June.

Update 10-03-05:  I weaned the June Wether lambs off their mothers and into the Washougal Pasture.  I left the ewe-lambs with their mothers hoping this will help catch them up on weight before winter.

Update 07-12-05:  My Late June ewes have finished lambing with 150% lambing.  Not as good as we hopped but enough to keep our customers happy.  The lambs are doing very well on the early summer grass.

Update 07-03-05:  It is banding time and therefore time to select replacement ewe-lambs and a new future ram for the replacement ewes.  We mark, on average, 3-6 ram-lambs and to watch them grow.  We picked 6 ram-lambs this time around and 24 ewe-lambs to watch.  We will narrow down the ram-lambs over the next 2-3 weeks.  The ewe-lambs will be held over for a year to see if they produce a lamb by next spring.  We require all of our ewe-lambs to have at least a single in by their first birthday.  We are going to use a Scottie ram on the ewe-lambs this year.  We are hoping for small but strong lambs that can "help" the ewe-lambs get started with an easy lambing.

Update 06-22-05: At last count we have 175% lambing.  The lambs are growing well and should be ready to wean in late July.  Make sure you get your orders in now for Sept. lambs, we have already sold out our January lambing.  NOTE: we are lambing a late group of ewes this year.  We should have about 10-15 lambs coming this month and will be ready for Christmas lamb.

March 2005: We purchase 25 bred, commercial Katahdin ewes from Patrick Shannahan out of  Coldwell Idaho.  We are very excited about these new ewes and the improved genetics that come with them.  Patrick has been very successful in selecting for a good sized ewe that sheds her wool.  Our ewes where bred to a 1/4 Dorper, 3/4 Katahdin ram.  We introduced him to the ewes on Nov. 1st for April 1st lambs.
